Glen Canyon Dam Long Term Experimental Plan (Environmental Impact Statement)
The Department of the Interior, through the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and the National Park Service (NPS), will prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) for the adoption of a long-term experimental and management plan (LTEMP) for the operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The EIS will fully evaluate dam operations and will provide the basis for decisions that identify management actions and experimental options that will provide a framework for adaptively managing Glen Canyon Dam over the next 15 to 20 years.
This plan will have long-term impacts to the Lees Ferry trout fishery (impacts could be positive or negative). We encourage all folks that enjoy this resource to become involved early. For more information please see http://ltempeis.anl.gov.
We encourage all anglers to use this comment form to voice their concerns during the scoping period. The General rule of being engaged in the NEPA process is; BE ACTIVE EARLY, BE ACTIVE OFTEN. The scoping period is the time to make sure that our concerns are addressed in the compliance documentation. The squeaky wheel only gets the grease if people are listening NOW IS THE TIME TO BE HEARD. This is our opportunity to make the Bureau of Reclamation and the National Park Service aware that this is a precious resource to the flycasting community. Comments are due by Jan 31.
Conservation work
The flycasters recently (October 2011) assisted the Arizona Game and Fish Department in their Kaibab Reservoir habitat program. Over 50 large juniper trees were sunk (see pictures) in the reservoir to increase habitat for crappie and bass. This project should help sustain this important warm water fishery during future drought years. Contact us if you are interested in helping with future conservation projects.
